The School of Japan Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies has a small but diverse body of students who come to learn about everything Japan-related, from classical literature to VTubers, from Edo merchant culture to Murakami Haruki's brand of magical realism, and from film subtitling to heritage tourism. Some of them choose to stay in academia after graduation, others go on to pursue various careers in business, international relations, diplomacy, etc.
Starting this year, we are organising "occasional talks" to showcase to our students what they can do with a degree in Japanese Studies/ Area Studies. The first lecture of the series will be on June 13 from 16:00-17:30, in Room 114, Research and Education Building, TUFS campus. My very good friend, excellent anthropologist, and engaging public speaker, prof. Carmen Sapunaru-Tamas (University of Hyogo) will tell us about blood bonds and researching Japanese festivals.
These events are, in principle, only for TUFS students and staff, but if you are interested do let me know and something can be definitely arranged!
